PREVENTIVE CONSERVATION OF PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS: CURRENT ISSUES IN PROTECTION AND RESERVATION

Abstract

The aim of the article is to explore the challenges in protecting photographic prints, focusing on the quality of materials used for printing and the conditions of display to ensure long-term preservation. The research methodology is based on a systematic approach and involves a combination of methods: analytical–examining studies on the durability of photographic materials under external influences, conditions of artwork display, and archival preservation standards, along with synthesizing findings from scientific literature on the topic; comparativestructural analysis to compare the properties of photographic materials and their interaction with the environment, aiming to identify challenges related to long-term preservation; and action research–engaging the researcher in both observation and practical solutions to improve the protection measures of photographic prints. The scientific Novelty lies in investigating and outlining the challenges in protecting photographic works, particularly by analyzing new approaches for assessing the quality of materials used for printing and proposing specific preventive conservation measures, as well as the introduction of the concept of “photographic prints” into the Ukrainian scientific discourse. Conclusions. The research concludes that an essential component of preventive conservation for photographic prints is the professional selection and application of archival-quality materials for printing and framing. Using branded paper made from 100% alpha cellulose, which is free from acids, lignin, and brighteners, as well as certified pigment inks, platinum or palladium salts, or carbon-based pigments, is one of the best choices of materials for print photographs. They enhance resilience against environmental influences, particularly sunlight, UV radiation, and humidity, ensuring successful long-term preservation over centuries. Compliance with standards such as ISO 9706 for paper and ISO 11798 for inks is also crucial for the conservation of art photography.
