Abstract

The article reveals the development of photorealism from the stage of its appearance in the 70s in the climate of Western culture up to the adoption of the aesthetics of photography by Ukrainian artists in the 80s of the 20th century and in our time. Its historical genesis is analyzed in terms of art movements and works of individual artists who preceded it and were technically and ideologically close to it, the first public mentions of photorealism are given, the characteristic features of the method are revealed, and a comparison of Western and Ukrainian photorealism is made. Due to the example of the illustrated works of artists Malcolm Morley, Richard Estes, Serhiy Basilev, Serhiy Sherstyuk, Oleksii Glazunov, Yuriy Solomko hereby were studied the artistic techniques used by artists to convey their own creative searches and ideas. The scientific novelty is the replenishment of the national source database with data from the thorough reserch of American art critics regarding photorealism in the 70s (the period of its emergence and spread), a systematic analysis of Ukrainian photorealism of the 20th–21st centuries, the introduction into scientific discourse of new names of contemporary artists: Oleksii Glazunov, Igor Hnativ , Serhiy Pyskunov, Anton Popernyak.
