MULTIMEDIA IN THE DESIGN OF THE EXHIBITION SPACE OF THE BABYN YAR MUSEUM AND EXHIBITION COMPLEX

The article examines the role of multimedia installations in the memorialization of the Babyn Yar tragedy in Kyiv. It provides a detailed description of three key projects: «Stones with Monoculars «A Look into the Past», the installation at 10 Beresteysky Avenue, and «Mirror Field». These installations use a combination of different media formats, such as sound and light effects, video and photo images, and mirror surfaces to immerse visitors in the atmosphere of the Babyn Yar tragedy and commemorate the victims of the Holocaust. The installation «A Look into the Past» consists of stone boulders with monoculars with photos and videos of occupied Kyiv in 1941–1943. The concept of the project is to allow viewers to compare the past and the present, to feel the connection between generations, and to reflect on the tragic fate of the Holocaust victims. The installation at 10 Beresteyskoho Avenue consists of stone boulders with a cut oak trunk between them, a symbol of a life interrupted. The Mirror Field installation consists of a 40-meter diameter mirror disk with 10 metal columns symbolizing the tree of life. On the columns and the disk you can see 100 thousand bullet holes of the same caliber as those used by the Nazis. The mirror surface reflects the environment and the visitors themselves, creating the effect of their presence. The article emphasizes that the multimedia installations of Babyn Yar are important memorial sites that honor the memory of Holocaust victims, call for the memory of the consequences of Nazism and racism, and make us think about the value of life and the need to resist any manifestations of hatred and discrimination. The Babyn Yar installations are unique examples of how multimedia can be combined with symbolism and metaphors to create emotionally charged memorial objects. They demonstrate how art can be an effective tool in countering forgetting and preventing similar tragedies from happening again in the future.
