REFLECTION OF JEWELLERY ART IN THE EUROPEAN PAINTING (ON THE EXAMPLE OF CULTURAL TRADITIONS OF ROMA PEOPLE)

The article examines in the context of the analysis of a number of the works of art an interest of artists in the role of gold jewellery in Roma culture as the main symbol of wealth, social status, luck, which is associated with a complex of mythological ideas, customs and rites. And also, the embodiment in art of the stereotypical idea of Gypsies’ love for gold items. The scientific novelty of the article is expressed in its theme and is related to the fact that, despite numerous paintings depict images of Roma people wearing gold jewellery as symbols of their material and spiritual culture, these paintings were not classified and analysed by scientists directly under this angle. The article is the first study in this direction. The purpose of the article is to research a phenomena of depicting Gypsies’ gold jewellery in paintings by domestic and foreign artists. The task of the research is related to its purpose and consists in the analysis of the role of jewellery art in the culture and everyday life of Roma people, the reflection of this tradition in the works of art of different authors and eras. To implement the purpose and tasks, a number of research methodologies were applied: for a holistic consideration of the issue the historical-cultural method and system-structural analysis were used; works of painting are characterized in terms of art analysis; the results were obtained thanks to the use of logical generalization method. Conclusions: the publication provides a concise description of the role of jewellery art in the life of Roma people, comprehends sustainable tradition of their use, which has reached the modern period. These statements are supported by an analysis of the activities of Ukrainian and foreign artists, who recorded this tradition in their paintings by means of fine art. The creative contribution of Emile Eisman-Semenowsky, Mariano Fortuny, Oleksandr Jose, Viktor Mykytenko, Jónás Tibi and other artists is described.
