Abstract

The purpose of the study is to determine the place of Ukrainian bead art in the complex of traditional costumes of the modern period, taking into account the influence of exhibition, artistic, collecting, scientific, pedagogical and creative activities. The scientific novelty is that for the first time the Ukrainian beadwork tradition as an integral part of folk costumes has been studied comprehensively, taking into account the direction of ethno-fashion, collecting, research, exhibition, festival and educational activities of the early twenty-first century. Conclusions. The study analyses the beadwork tradition inherent in the national decorative and applied arts and its tangible manifestation – beaded products and beaded decoration of individual elements of clothing as an integral part of the traditional costume of the Ukrainian people. The study, by analysing the place of the Ukrainian beadwork tradition and the ways of its popularisation in our time, found that, having appeared in the nineteenth century in Ukraine, it influenced the complex of folk costumes, becoming part of it and strengthening its aesthetic, amulet, ceremonial and informational functions. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, beaded products remain an integral part of both traditional costumes and modern clothing. It has been established that this is facilitated by: collecting work of collectors, museums and private exhibition and art institutions; publication of specialised publications; creation of traditional products by craftsmen; pedagogical activities of artists who carry the beadwork tradition; holding thematic exhibitions and festivals; use of this tradition in the activities of domestic designers who develop the fashion industry and present their collections in Ukraine and abroad.
